Day 1: From Pain to Purpose
By Samuel Luak, Welcome Churches
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Forty-one years ago, my life changed in just one day. As a young boy, I was suddenly forced to leave my home and my family. I did not choose this journey, it was chosen for me. Everything familiar and safe was taken away. I felt alone, confused, and full of questions: Why me? Where is God in this?
Over the years, however, I have come to understand something important: my story has value. The pain was real, but so is the purpose. Every painful memory speaks also of my endurance. Every tear has grown into compassion in me. What once felt like only loss is now part of a greater story, a story of strength, grace, and hope.
Today, I no longer hide my past, I honour it. Because when I share my story, it helps others find courage. Through it, others can see God at work, bringing healing from hurt and purpose from pain.
During this Refugee Week, I thank God that my past does not define me. It refreshes me. I carry with me lessons that can help others heal. That is why I choose to walk alongside others who have been, or are still, on this same journey from pain to purpose. Just like mine, your story matters.
Whatever pain you are going through today, let it become a testimony of your resilience. Let your journey speak hope to someone still walking through the storm. God can use your story to strengthen others and bring life where there was once loss.
Want to support more refugees like Samuel?
Samuel is a strong and courageous person - we know this firsthand, because he’s our colleague. We’ve seen how God has strengthened him through his journey, turning pain into purpose day by day. But Samuel’s story doesn’t have to be unique. With love, support, and community, many more refugees and people seeking asylum can experience transformation, hope, and belonging.
At Welcome Churches, we’re equipping churches across the UK to welcome refugees, celebrate diversity, and build communities where everyone is empowered to belong and find their voice.
By giving today, you’re helping to shape a future where no refugee or person seeking asylum is left alone.
