Day 2: My Voice Matters
By Samuel Luak, Welcome Churches
“When I speak, I make space for others to be heard too.”
For over forty-one years, I have lived the story of movement across borders, cultures, and seasons of both pain and purpose. From the rivers and deserts of Sudan to the Middle East, Europe, and now the UK, I have experienced war, exile, rejection, and the faithful hand of God guiding me through it all.
For many years, I carried my story in silence. But I came to realise that silence serves no one. Refugees are often spoken about, but rarely truly listened to. I chose to speak, not to seek sympathy, but to share the truth. My story is not only one of hardship, but a testimony of faith, resilience, and God's grace.
Words carry power. In God’s hands, they become tools of justice, healing, and transformation. Like the prophet Isaiah, I say, “Here I am. Send me.” When I speak, I make space for others to find their voice too to be heard, valued, and understood.
On this second day of Refugee Week 2025, may we speak with refugees, not just about them. Let us listen deeply, make space generously, and encourage others to share their stories. In doing so, we help bring healing, dignity, and hope.
“Then I said, ‘Here I am. Send me!”
Want to support more refugees like Samuel?
Samuel is a strong and courageous person - we know this firsthand, because he’s our colleague. We’ve seen how God has strengthened him through his journey, turning pain into purpose day by day. But Samuel’s story doesn’t have to be unique. With love, support, and community, many more refugees and people seeking asylum can experience transformation, hope, and belonging.
At Welcome Churches, we’re equipping churches across the UK to welcome refugees, celebrate diversity, and build communities where everyone is empowered to belong and find their voice.
By giving today, you’re helping to shape a future where no refugee or person seeking asylum is left alone.
