Day 3: Holding on to Hope

Holding on to Hope
Samuel Luak

By Samuel Luak, Welcome Churches

Hope is a word found in every culture. Although its meaning may vary, for many it is the quiet strength that keeps us going when life falls apart. In this sense, hope is not just a dream, it is a deep belief that something better is possible, even when we cannot yet see it.

For refugees and displaced people, hope becomes a lifeline in the face of fear, loss, and uncertainty. I know this personally. Like many who have been forced to leave home, I have seen how hope can appear in unexpected places, in the kindness of a stranger, in a warm welcome, or in small acts of compassion.

For many refugees and those seeking safety, faith becomes a deep source of hope. Even in detention centres or refugee camps, stories of courage and resilience remind us that light can shine in the darkest places. As a Christian, my hope is rooted in God, who walks with me through every valley. As Scripture says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).

Without hope, we give in to despair. But with hope, we can rebuild, dream again, and believe that our story is not over. On this third day of Refugee Week, I pray for all who are displaced, whether within their own countries or seeking safety abroad, including in the UK that they will hold on to hope and trust the One who holds the future.

Want to support more refugees like Samuel?

Samuel is a strong and courageous person - we know this firsthand, because he’s our colleague. We’ve seen how God has strengthened him through his journey, turning pain into purpose day by day. But Samuel’s story doesn’t have to be unique. With love, support, and community, many more refugees and people seeking asylum can experience transformation, hope, and belonging.

At Welcome Churches, we’re equipping churches across the UK to welcome refugees, celebrate diversity, and build communities where everyone is empowered to belong and find their voice.

By giving today, you’re helping to shape a future where no refugee or person seeking asylum is left alone.
