Day 4: Reclaiming Dignity
By Samuel Luak, Welcome Churches
On this fourth day of Refugee Week, I want to reflect on the theme of reclaiming dignity.
Human dignity is the God-given worth and value that every person holds simply by being human. It is not earned or granted by others; it is inherent in all of us. Regardless of background, race, status, or ability, every individual deserves respect, fairness, and compassion.
Listening to the stories of refugees and people seeking asylum reminds us of the trauma, humiliation, and rejection they so often face. However, the truth stays: each person is created in the image of God, and nothing can take away their dignity. I want anyone who has ever been dehumanised or made to feel less than others to know that your dignity is sacred, and no one can take it from you. This has also been my experience over the past forty years.
For these reasons, we all share a responsibility to protect human dignity through our laws, institutions, and communities, especially for those who are most vulnerable. Reclaiming dignity means standing up for justice, offering support, and recognising the full humanity of every refugee and displaced person. Refugees are not less human. They are our neighbours, our equals, and they deserve to be treated as such.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Want to support more refugees like Samuel?
Samuel is a strong and courageous person - we know this firsthand, because he’s our colleague. We’ve seen how God has strengthened him through his journey, turning pain into purpose day by day. But Samuel’s story doesn’t have to be unique. With love, support, and community, many more refugees and people seeking asylum can experience transformation, hope, and belonging.
At Welcome Churches, we’re equipping churches across the UK to welcome refugees, celebrate diversity, and build communities where everyone is empowered to belong and find their voice.
By giving today, you’re helping to shape a future where no refugee or person seeking asylum is left alone.
