Day 7: A New Chapter Begins

A New Chapter Begins
Samuel Luak

By Samuel Luak, Welcome Churches

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up…
— Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

The experience of coming from a refugee background is part of a person’s journey, but it does not define who they are. Refugees are also made in God’s image, gifted with talents, dreams, and the potential to thrive. Their past may include loss and uncertainty, but it does not determine their future.

Too often, refugees are viewed only through the lens of struggle. But they are more than survivors, they are leaders and a blessing to their communities. I know this firsthand. After decades in ministry across continents and earning five degrees, I’m still asked if I can preach, reflecting assumptions that miss the whole person. Our past does not limit us; it prepares us to lead, inspire, and serve.

To every refugee on this Refugee Sunday: God is doing something new in your life. Step into this chapter with courage and faith. Your story matters, and your future is full of promise. And to those who support refugees: thank you for showing God’s compassion through your words and actions. You’re welcome is part of God’s bigger story. Continue your faithful witness, walk alongside refugees not with pity, but with partnership and respect. A new chapter begins today.

Want to support more refugees like Samuel?

Samuel is a strong and courageous person - we know this firsthand, because he’s our colleague. We’ve seen how God has strengthened him through his journey, turning pain into purpose day by day. But Samuel’s story doesn’t have to be unique. With love, support, and community, many more refugees and people seeking asylum can experience transformation, hope, and belonging.

At Welcome Churches, we’re equipping churches across the UK to welcome refugees, celebrate diversity, and build communities where everyone is empowered to belong and find their voice.

By giving today, you’re helping to shape a future where no refugee or person seeking asylum is left alone.
